Recently, I have been trying out a bunch of different face masks. It’s more of an experiment for me because my skin has changed so much in the past year. Products I have been using for the past few years aren’t working as well as they used to. Suddenly, I’m breaking out frequently, have a ton of blackheads, and very dry skin patches. It’s been a bit of a struggle. Cleansing face washes are the most convenient, but they don’t seem to work all the time. That is why I had to add some face masks into my routine a few times a week. All in the name of getting my skin under control again!
Finding the right face masks for you doesn’t have to be difficult. All you need to do is figure out the most significant issues with your skin. From there you can figure out which face masks you may need. It is also beneficial to choose different face masks for different times of the year. The best summer face masks should remove oils and unclog pores. The best winter face masks should deeply hydrate and exfoliate away dead skin. Once you start looking at your skin, you will know what kind of face masks you need. It isn’t that hard I promise!
The Best Store-Bought Face Mask Options
Being able to go to your local drug store and buy beauty masks is incredibly convenient. Ordering face masks online can be even more convenient. There are many more options and great deals.
Most people prefer prepackaged face masks because you don’t have to think about mixing, measuring, or finding the ingredients. It removes a majority of the guesswork. Then it all comes down to finding the one that will fit your needs best. Luckily, they have face masks for absolutely everything!
Types of Masks and Their Benefits
Clay Face Masks: This is a wonderful option if you have issues with your skin beyond typical acne. Medicinal clay binds with the toxins on the surface of your skin. It is also rich in minerals like potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, silica, and sodium. It can help reduce inflammation and improve skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis. There are so many different options for clay face masks. But by far, one of the most popular is Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. It is a natural, simple, and very affordable face mask. So it is the perfect mask to try!

Charcoal Masks: As you probably know, activated charcoal is all the rage. It is being used in face masks and teeth whitening toothpaste. There are a few options when it comes to using charcoal as a face mask. You could get a sheet mask, bubble mask, charcoal clay mask, or even a black charcoal peel off mask. The peel off masks can be the most painful, but they are incredibly beneficial and will help remove blackheads and dead skin. Pore Cleansing Masks: This category has a wide range of options. The charcoal masks could fit into this category too. But I wanted to tell you a little bit about a pore cleansing face mask. When buying one, you want something that will draw out the impurities. That is why activated charcoal is a significant trend right now. Others options include tea tree oil masks, seaweed masks, clay, or even mud masks. That’s only to name a few. An affordable and popular option is the Formula 10.0.6 Pore Be Pure Clarifying Mud Mask. Hydrating Face Masks: When you want good skin in the harsh winter air you’re seriously going to need to consider face masks. The key is hydration. Use a hydrating mask a few times a week and always moisturize with a noncomedogenic product. Acne Clearing Face Masks: It can be hard to find the best face mask for acne. We don’t want to break out or see another blemish. But it can be hard to find the perfect thing. I had always used a tea tree face wash, and it kept my face relatively clear. But in recent times I need something that will clean deep into my pores. ORIGINS Out of Trouble 10 Minute Mask contains salicylic acid and zinc oxide as two of many fantastic ingredients. It clears out your pores and makes getting blemishes half impossible.

These are, of course, only a few options. But each one has a multitude of benefits, which is why I chose them. There are other options for specific problems. Like a blackhead face mask, face masks for oily skin, or a face mask for dry skin. There is even a type of “face peel mask” which will make the top layer of skin peel off!
Overall, it just really comes down to understanding what you need. That will allow you to find the perfect product and go from there. You will also need to pay attention to the bottle. It will let you know how many times you should use each one. Some can be used daily, like a moisturizing mask. But charcoal masks should only be used once or twice a week, depending on your skin. They can dry out your skin if used too often.
Homemade Face Masks
It is easier than you might think to learn how to make a face mask. You can also get just as much of a variety in a DIY facial mask as you would with a prepacked mask! The best thing about DIY masks is the fact that you can mix up just enough for one application. That way you can test out different things and see what works best for you. You’ll also typically be using ingredients from your kitchen. So if you don’t end up making the mask again, all the ingredients will still be useful.
The Best Ingredients to Use in Homemade Face Masks
Honey is an incredibly beneficial ingredient for your skin. You really want to use raw honey for the best results. It is natural, nourishing, moisturizing, and will help to prevent your skin from producing too many oils. It also naturally helps to tone your skin and fade acne scars.
Activated charcoal is another fantastic ingredient. Charcoal has gained popularity because it is more useful in beauty products than most people realize. You might not have it in the house regularly. But if you decide to get some, you can use it for more than just face masks! It is the perfect ingredient because it detoxes your skin and body. It draws the dirt out of your pores and clears your blackheads.
Vitamin E is more than just an oral supplement. You can add it to any mask and it will nourish your skin and help fight acne. You can get it as an oil or as gel caplets that you can break and add to any mask.
Baking soda is another ingredient that is super versatile. It will act as an exfoliant to remove dead skin as well as level the pH balance of your skin. You could even add it to your toothpaste for whitening benefits and plaque removal.
Aloe vera is a fantastic natural moisturizer. It will keep your skin hydrated and looking young. It improves the elasticity in your skin which will keep it looking young. So if you need to soothe your skin, aloe vera is an excellent ingredient to add!
Last, I wanted to mention coconut oil. It started trending awhile ago and never went away. For a good reason! Coconut oil has antibacterial properties, moisturizes your skin, and prevents breakouts. It is a miracle product that everyone has been waiting for. Being so natural it is much better than other types of oils for cooking, but it also has so many benefits for your skin!
DIY Face Mask Recipes
Making homemade face masks is so simple! All you need are a few ingredients, typically found in your kitchen! We have covered some DIY masks in the past but I wanted to give you a few more options! They are cheap, easy, and packed full of benefits!,
Honey Oatmeal Face Mask
This one is super simple, and you can use it as is or add extra ingredients for more benefits. Such as the vitamin E or even a minimal amount of cinnamon. But you will need to be careful with that. I once added a ½ of a tablespoon of cinnamon rather than a ½ of a teaspoon. My skin turned bright red and began to burn immediately, even though I washed it off right away. So make sure you always double-check those measurements!
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp of old-fashioned rolled oats (you will want to grind them)
- 1/2 tbsp of lemon juice
- 2 tbsp of honey
- 4 drops of tea tree essential oil
You will only need to mix everything together and apply to clean skin. Use warm water on your skin first to open your pores. Avoid your eyes during application. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and rinse off with cold water to close your pores. The honey will help tone your skin and prevent it from getting oily as quickly. The oatmeal will help your skin retain moisture. Tea tree oil will act as an antibacterial to cleanse your pores.
DIY Blackhead Removal Mask
Another straightforward way to remove blackheads is to make pore strips! This peel off face mask acts as a pore strip to pull the blackheads out of your pores. You only need two ingredients and extra time to allow it to dry properly. But this is by far one of the best ways to remove your blackheads!
Ingredients:
- 2 to 3 tbsp of raw milk
- 1 packet of plain gelatin
You might even consider adding a teaspoon of activated charcoal for extra benefits. It might make it even thicker though, so you may need to add extra milk.
Warm the raw milk for a few seconds in the microwave. Don’t boil it because that will remove the nutrients. You only need to make it warm enough to mix the gelatin in without making it lumpy. Then apply it to the areas with blackheads and allow it to dry completely. Depending on how thick the layer is, it may take up to a half an hour to dry. When it has dried completely, you can peel it off like a pore strip. It’s that easy!
Conclusion
It isn’t hard to find good face masks! Although, you will need to focus on finding the best face mask for your skin. Since you know your skin best, this shouldn’t be hard. Also, remember that you will probably need different face masks for different times of the year. I have combination skin. So I have oily skin in the summer and very dry skin in the winter. I have to make sure I adapt.
I hope this was helpful for you. It can be hard to find the perfect mask. You may be surprised by your options. So keep looking and don’t give up. Your skin will clear up before you know it! Good luck!
