How to Dye Your Hair with Kool Aid in 5 Simple Steps

October 27, 2016 by Jennifer Scott

Dying your hair doesn’t necessarily have to be a difficult process. You can now experiment with different shades and colors without using a permanent dye. There are plenty of homemade solutions, but in this post, we have chosen to detail the necessary steps on how to dye your hair with Kool Aid. I’m sure you all remember this fruity drink from your childhood. Not only it is less expensive than a normal hair dye, but it also works easier and quicker than a permanent coloring product.

How to Dye Your Hair with Kool Aid –  5 Simple Steps

You will need the following supplies:

  • 2 packages of Kool Aid.
  • 2 cups of water.
  • One pot or pan.
  • One comb.
  • An old T-shirt.
  • One larger bowl or container.

Step 1

Prepare your hair. Make sure it is 100 percent dry. If you want to achieve better results, you should wash your locks a day before applying the Kool Aid product. Then, make sure to wear plastic or rubber gloves to avoid stains. Even though you can remove Kool Aid from your skin, it is not that easy to do it. Untangle your hair. Use a brush or a comb to make sure there are no tangled locks. Also, you shouldn’t have hairspray or any other styling products in it.

Step 2

Prepare the Kool Aid mix. When it comes to how to dye your hair with Kool Aid, this is an important step that you should pay attention to. Use the pot to pour two Kool Aid packages and two cups of water in it. Boil the mixture on the stove. You can choose from a wide range of colors such as cherry, blue, purple, or pink. For example, the grape flavor will make your hair purple. If you want to obtain a more intense shade, use less water. If you want to have a faded hue, use more water.

Step 3

Decide how much of your hair you want to dye with Kool Aid. For example, if you only want to color your hair tips, take the pot off the stove, let it cool off, then pour it into a bowl. Dip your hair in it and wait for about 3 to 5 minutes. Another alternative is to keep your hair in a ponytail and dip it all at once.

Step 4

After the waiting time, remove the hair from the bowl and pat it dry. To do this, you should use paper or bath towels. However, make sure you won’t miss the bath towel because it will stain all over. Wait until your locks are completely dry and then wash your hair as usual.

Step 5

Now is time to talk about how to maintain your color a longer period. It is one of the most important tips on how to dye your hair with Kool Aid. For starters, you should wash your hair less often. Also, you could use a mild shampoo, one that is specially made for colored hair. Sun protective products are good for when you want to keep your color longer. If you have decided to get rid of your hair color, all you have to do is to wash your locks more often. In time, the dye will fade away.

Let’s Recap

The above-described guidelines on how to dye your hair with Kool Aid will take no more than maximum 30 minutes. It is a safer and quicker alternative to using regular coloring products. You should use this method if you want to experiment with different colors and change them more often.
