We are currently creeping our way closer to the end of winter. Time moves so slowly when you are stuck inside, huddled under blankets. Ever so slowly and carefully, we are moving toward warmth and sunshine. Yesterday we got a taste of spring, which is always so exciting for me. That means summer is just around the corner! Summer for me means late nights, cool breezes, while I have drinks around a bonfires with my closest friends. But, most importantly, trips to the beach! The beach is a place I need to go at least once in the summer, if not much more than that.
I need to sun in my face and the sand between my toes, while the waves splash against my legs. Unfortunately, summer and the beach is still out of reach and I will have to settle with my blankets and avery stuffy nose for now.
I found myself wishing that I could at least capture a summery look. I thought that meant tank tops, shorts and a good natural tan. All of which aren’t exactly achievable at the moment without freezing. At first I thought those were the only possibilities. I didn’t even consider the fact that I could surpass all these chilly alternatives for summery looking hair.
You might be a little confused, what in the world is summer hair? Hair is just hair right? No matter the season?
Well, I thought so too until I started working on our list of The 10 Best Sea Salt Spray Products of 2018. What is more summery than sea salt hair products? This could be the perfect way to even just get a taste of summer in the midst of what seems like endless winter! So for this first review, we will be considering Beach Blonde by John Frieda. A wonderful and simple sea salt spray that smells like summer and is, in fact, not only for blondes!
Things to Consider When Trying Beach Blonde
This is not a type of product that I am personally familiar with. While I have heard a lot about sea salt sprays, I have never used one. I know that there are some other people out there who are just as curious about this as I am!
I want to really break this product down and see what it is used for exactly. I also want to know why some people love it and others are totally indifferent. The best way to learn more about how effective a product really is, is to see what other people really think about it! I have sifted through as much as I could find to give you the most realistic breakdown of this product as I could!
What Look You Get: A sea salt spray can be used in a few different ways. The look created with it all depends on your hair type and style. It adds some volume in the same way you might use a dry shampoo to keep your hair from looking flat. This is meant to add texture to your hair, but while also reducing frizz. It weighs down the strands in an almost wet and fashionably messy appearance. It is also surprisingly lightweight considering it tames down the hair so well!
How to Use: This will certainly be something you will have to play around with a little on your own hair. Your haircut and hair type will play a huge roll in the finished product. You can use this product right after you shake it up. It can be used on damp, towel dried hair, or even completely dry hair. When you have short hair, all you really need to do is spritz some product into it and mess it up a bit. This will create a cute tousled look! You can also use it on long hair by spritzing the product midway up your hair and combing it through. Then you could twist it into a few different sections, running your fingers through it softly as it dries. This will create a soft and wavy look.
Type of Hair: This is probably the best for thin hair. If you find you hair to be thin, limp and rather lifeless, this could be something that will give it some texture and volume. The length of their hair is really not an issue, it will just contribute to the finished look. But since so many people with thin or curly hair love this, I have no idea whether it would work on my own thick and wavy hair. I feel like it would more than likely create a loose scrunched look.
Multiple Hair Benefits: Some might worry about this product weighing down their hair. It’s almost hard not to expect something like that. If you normally use hair sprays, mousses or even gels, you are probably used to an item like this making you hair feel heavy. However, this spray is natural and should leave your hair feeling soft. Rather than crunchy and uncomfortable.
Long Term Side Effects: There are some complaints about this product drying out peoples hair and scalp. It seems to me that the people who had this problem were using this spray all the time. This could be easily avoided by using this occasionally, rather than constantly. However, I understand that it can be easy to run into this issue because you might want something that will make your hair easy to style on a daily basis.
Scent: If you love the smell of the beach and anything that reminds you of it, you will probably love this scent. This spray has strong scent of coconut. Some even think it reminds them of sunscreen. This might not be the best smell for everyone. I don’t personally love everything that smells like coconut, but my mom would absolutely adore this. To each their own I suppose!
Who Should Buy This Product
If you need an easy, spray and go kind of look, this could be a great product for you! This sea salt spray can go on damp or dry hair. Although it is definitely said to work best on damp hair. The charm of this product really is found in the fact that it is so simple to use. It’s hard not to want it for the days you just don’t have the energy to get out the curling irons. It also is a very casual look and if you already have wavy or curly hair, this will bring out more definition in those curls.

Who Shouldn’t Buy This Product
This is supposed to be something that can be used on any type of hair. Even dry, damaged hair. Whether this damage was caused by heat or color is not supposed to matter. Even though it is safe for damaged hair, I don’t know that I would recommend it. The finished look created by this spray probably won’t look the same as it would on healthy hair. It might soothe your frizz but it also says it will create a “matte finish” which may enhance the look of already dry hair.
Beach Blonde by John Frieda
The Beach Blonde product line is a fantastic idea for a very affordable price. You can create a soft, fun and effortless look. It is super easy to use since all you need to do is spray it on your hair and either twist, scrunch or tousle your hair. It just depends on your hair length and what you are trying to achieve. If you have very thin hair, this will help create texture and volume, similar to that of a dry-shampoo. This product will make you look and smell like summer, which is sometimes exactly what you need on the endless winter days.
Pros
- Adds volume and texture
- Creates soft beachy waves
- Easy to use
Cons

- Won’t work well for everyone
- May make hair feel crunchy
Features and Benefits
Again, I want to give you a really good breakdown of all of the the aspects of this product. I like to know everything about a product before I buy it. In this case, I definitely needed to do my research because I have never used a sea salt spray before. It has actually been a really interesting project because this is a product that seems really useful. Everyone won’t agree, they might think this is just a spray, how great can it be? Well let me break it down for you!
- It adds volume, which is a great perk for anyone who has really thin or straight hair.
- It adds texture which is another great perk for those of us who have thick hair. We have the volume…but sometimes it can fall a little flat, or even a little frizzy. This helps contain that.
-
Creates beachy waves if you have straight hair. I have hair with soft waves and I would get more of this look as well.
- Beach Blonde will help accentuate and control natural curls. So if you have naturally curly hair and you have a hard time keeping the curls without all the frizz. This product could help you captivate those curls!
- Easy to use. All you need to do is shake, spray and style. It is best to do directly after a shower when you hair is still damp.
- Good for all hair types. Seriously your hair could be thick, thin, greasy, dry or anything in between. It doesn’t matter the color or whether it has been color treated before either. Although I have said before that I think you should experiment a little. I think this would look best on healthy hair.
-
Smells like coconut, which most really like because it counts as beachy and summery. Just another reminder of what you’re waiting for!
-
A light-weight product that is supposed to be very soft and won’t weigh down your hair. It isn’t to be confused with a hairspray, mousse or gel products. It is very different and will not leave your hair feeling the same way. Although some people don’t like the crunchy feeling it adds to their hair. I have a suspicion they might add too much product. Just an observation though!
-
It provides lasting hold for the look that you create with it. Most people said they would use it multiple times a week because they were so happy with the outcome. You could even extend the look over a few days if you dampened your hair again to add more, or even used dry shampoo on your roots!

Alternatives
So, in case you weren’t super impressed with this product or you just really like options, I have a few more for you! They are all from our list. I am still working on the rest of the reviews, but this will give you a jump start look at the rest of the products. Maybe along the way I will branch out a little more. You’ll have to check the rest out and see! But anyway, here are three similar products from other brands!
This is another sea salt spray! You probably aren’t going to notice any huge differences between a lot of these products. I have a hard time finding them myself. A big difference here is the scent for this one. This has a “tropical banana” scent. Some of you may love that…I would probably not at all, but like I said before, to each their own! Two more big differences that you’ll find here are that this is a more affordable product and it also contains aloe. This may help to keep your hair from drying out with constant use. I wouldn’t set your hopes too high though because as great as this seems, sea salt will still have some type of drying effect if you use it enough!
Who Would Buy This Spray
I would say this is best for those who really want the beachy look, but want to avoid the hefty price tag. John Frieda’s spray is definitely affordable too in my opinion, but this is literally half the price of that one. So if you are starting out and want to learn how to use a sea salt spray, this would be a great trial item!
Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe vs Beach Blonde by John Frieda Comparison
- Not Your Mother’s is more affordable
- Not Your Mother’s smells like banana
- Beach Blonde smells like coconut
- Not Your Mother’s has aloe for added protection against dryness
- Beach Blonde seemed to have more hold, so volume create would stick around better
So if you are interested in trying a sea salt spray, this could be a wonderful starter item. I have never used one myself and the only thing making me question this item is the banana smell! And there’s a good possibility I would ignore my distaste for bananas because it’s so affordable. I am a sucker for a good deal after all. If you think you might be interested in trying out this item, you can find Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe on Amazon!
This is, of course, another sea salt spray. This is a more expensive product, but it has a few perks for the higher price. This spray is 100% organic, comes in a slightly bigger bottle and is said to add even more body without the possibility of crunch. In addition to this, Harvey Prince is a perfume brand, so I think it’s pretty inevitable that this is going to smell beautiful!
Who Would Buy This Spray
The thing that really sets this one apart from the others so far is the fact that this is a 100% organic product. Not everyone need this in a product, but I know this can be really important for some!
Harvey Prince vs. John Frieda: Sea Salt Spray Comparison
- Harvey Prince is 100% organic
- Harvey Prince won’t get crunchy
- Harvey Prince comes in a slightly bigger size
- Both control frizz and create beach waves
If you love the idea of trying out a sea salt spray and want something organic I would definitely recommend this one! It is an all around quality item and smells great. If you’re interested you can find the Harvey Prince Organics Sea Salt Texturizing Mist on Amazon!
This is another pricey option, but it is even more environmentally friendly than even the Harvey Prince option. Herbivore is 100% natural and 100% vegan. It guarantees that it was not tested on animals. This particular one smells like coconut and vanilla. Yum! This one is even more interesting than the other options because it comes in a sturdy glass bottle, with cute artwork on the label, and it is made in the USA in small batches. I like the idea that this is a carefully crafted and thoughtful product!
Who Would Buy This Spray
If you only buy cruelty free items, this is something you’ll definitely appreciate! It also is great if you like buying local, within the USA is local for me anyway. It is totally natural and totally vegan. I don’t always look for this in products because I can’t always afford to. It unfortunately is always the more expensive product. But if I have the option between this and other in the same price range, I would definitely prefer something 100% natural!
Herbivore vs Beach Blonde by John Frieda Comparison
- Herbivore is 100% natural and vegan
- Herbivore comes in a slightly larger glass bottle
- Herbivore sprays a thin mist for extra control
- John Frieda is more affordable
- Herbivore an be used on your skin too
Overall this is a really cool product. If you don’t mind the price tag, I would definitely recommend it. It isn’t very widely known, but it seems to get good reviews from those who have tried it so far. It also is a little more versatile than the other options so far since you can also use it one your skin. If you are interested in the Herbivore Sea Salt Spray you can also find it on Amazon!

Conclusion
So in the end I think this is a fantastic way for you to get in touch with your summer self. I would absolutely recommend it. This is a very easy way to do your hair if you got up late and only have a few minutes to get to on the road for work! So even if you don’t think you would use it all the time, it is still great to have on hand in hair emergencies! (We all have them sometimes!)
I like the simplicity of the product more than anything. The idea of a very natural product with a nice smell and with so many great qualities sounds great to me!
Just remember, you know your hair and skin much better than any beauty stylist or brand does. This product seemed to really deliver, on most counts. It isn’t supposed to dry out your hair or scalp. But it still can with excessive use. This may happen quickly for some but may never happen for others. It all depends on you and how your body reacts to simple things like salt water.
