amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

So I’m getting the itch to do something crazy. It has been a really long time since I dyed my hair and I think it’s time to do something drastic in time for warm weather! It’s been close to two years since I dyed it last. It has finally grown out completely and I’m 100% back to my natural color!

You see, every so many years I go through a phase where I dye my hair it all the time. There are a lot of people who aren’t interested in trying anything drastic, which I totally understand. It can feel like a really big deal when you start out. Especially if you do it at home like I do. I got over being worried about how it would look a long time ago. I like to try new things and if it turns out different than intended I’m usually fine with it. You can always dye it again or let it grow out. But after awhile it ends up being too much time and upkeep. So I always bite the bullet eventually and let the color fade. Now I’ve had totally virgin hair for awhile. It’s good to give it a long break and start from scratch.

But before I get into the process of dyeing my hair I want to be prepared for the upkeep and maintenance. I’m probably going to bleach my hair and dye it a light pink. It’s one of the colors I haven’t tried yet. Pastel colors are super cute and really popular right now. I don’t really care about trends, but since it is really popular I can get a lot of pointers online. There are also a lot more products geared towards these colors so I’ll have options for once!

One of the best ways to make semi-permanent colors last is by only washing your hair with cold water. But not washing it often is really the key. So before I get into dyeing my hair I wanted to find a really great dry shampoo to use between washes so I won’t look totally gross. After checking out some different ones I decided to look into Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo! Customers really praised this product so it caught my interest. Time to find out what all the rave reviews were about!

Things to Consider When Trying Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

As always when I’m looking into a new product, I always make a list of the important things to consider. This is very helpful when you are comparing products. There are a few features of this product that I like to look into the most. I narrowed down all the categories to give you an idea of what you can expect from this product!

  • Scent: This dry shampoo contains Sea Buckthorn Berry, also known as Obliphica. I had never heard of it before. But apparently this added ingredient smells fantastic and leaves your hair feeling soft and manageable. It has a light and pleasant perfume. Like most dry shampoos, the smell can be a little overwhelming if you use a lot. But a little bit goes a long way so if you run into this issue you’re probably overdoing it anyway.

  • Hair Types: Dry shampoo is not a very touche product. Anyone can use it! If you happen to have a lot of issues with a dry scalp you just need to be a little more careful and you probably can’t use it as often. But it is a transparent product that will not leave residue and can be used on any hair color and type.

  • Affordability: Amika is not exactly a cheap product. Actually, it is one of the highest prices on our list. But in a lot of customers believe that high prices add up to high quality. Because of that, they actually lean toward this product over the others for the price. It isn’t a totally outrageous price. But if you’re used to searching for the best drugstore product, this might be a bit more of a blow to the wallet than you’re used to.

  • Convenience: Dry shampoo is just about one of the most convenient products I’ve ever used. They are easy to use and only take a few minutes to use from start to finish. You only really need to spot treat at your roots to absorb oils. It doesn’t really clean your hair but it does give you the appearance of clean hair. If your hair gets oily after only a day this is a huge help. It will save you time during your week if you normally shower daily and want to be able to last longer.

  • Uses: This is a great product to use if you want to absorb dirt, oil and odor. It will also add texture and volume along the way! It really is the perfect way to save your hair from constant washes. This can help keep your hair from drying out from constant washes or even preserve your hair color!

  • Drawbacks: For me, the price is the biggest issue for me. I don’t see the point in spending a ton on hair products. At least not the ones I’ll use often and have to replace constantly like a dry shampoo. I can understand going to the salon or spending extra money when dyeing your hair. It can be intimidating to do it yourself or to use cheap products. You have to find what works for your hair and do your best to avoid damaging your hair. Dry shampoo isn’t going to damage your hair beyond repair so I don’t personally see the point in spending a lot. But if you don’t normally have much luck with other brands, this might be what you’ve been looking for!

Who Should Buy This Product

Amika is a great product for people who haven’t had much luck with dry shampoo in the past. They don’t always absorb as much oil as people expect them to. They also could leave your hair feeling sticky and weighed down like hairspray. But if you’ve had a lot of problems with that in the past, Amika could be the dry shampoo you’ve been waiting for. It is lightweight and contains Sea Buckthorn Berry which is supposed to leave your hair feeling as good as it will look. Clean, fresh, soft and manageable. What more do you need?

Who Shouldn't Buy This Product

If you aren’t a fan of spending a whole lot on hair products, this is probably not going to be your first choice. I typically like to try some low dollar items before moving up in price. I never believed you had to spend a lot on hair products to find something that will work well. Especially in case of a dry shampoo. I’ve never had any issues with the ones I’ve tried. But some people who didn’t have much luck with other products actually fell in love with Amika’s dry shampoo. This is typically if they had very oily or very dark hair. They had issues with residue showing up or the fact that the dry shampoo didn’t absorb as much oil as they were hoping. Amika is great if you have a lot of problems with that. But if you have pretty manageable hair, you might not see any sense in spending extra.

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo comes in a 5.3oz bottle. Easy to bring with you on the go, easy to apply and a little bit will go a long way. It is a cruelty free product and does not contain paraben, sulfates, phthalates or talc. It is also made with rice starch and does not contain aluminum like most dry shampoos. If you want something with a better ingredient list, this could be what you’ve been searching for! It is a lightweight formula what will not weigh down your hair or feel sticky. It can be used on all hair types and is especially great if you have thin hair and want something to absorb oils and provide texture and volume.

Features and Benefits

So we already did a break down of some important things to consider, but I want to delve a little deeper. This segment will give you a better breakdown of the features of this product. Hopefully it will help you out when you’re comparing Amika to other products.

  • First off, this is a cruelty free item. It has not been tested on animals. Not everyone looks for this in a product but it is very important. To be honest, I think it is totally unnecessary to test products on animals anyway. If you aren’t confident enough to use it on a human being, it shouldn’t go on an animal either!

  • Amika is made with good ingredients. I wouldn’t go as far as saying this is an all natural product. But it does not contain aluminum, sulfates, phthalates or parabens, so there was definitely some care that went into this product.

  • Sea Buckthorn Berry, also known as Obliphica, is a unique ingredient in this dry shampoo. It smells great and helps to keep your hair feeling soft and manageable!

  • It is a lightweight product. Amika will not leave your hair feeling sticky, dirty or weighed down. So if you hate the way hairspray feels and run into the same feeling with some dry shampoos, I’m sure you’ll like this one!

  • Another issue is the residue that dry shampoo normally leave on your hair. This product has a very fine and translucent mist. You won’t see residue as long as you shake the container first, spray at least 10-12 inches from your scalp and let it sit for a minute or two before working it in.

  • Dry shampoo is a really popular item because it absorbs the oils in your hair and leaves you looking clean and fresh. Amika goes even further and absorb oils, dirt and odor. That will help you look and feel super clean.

  • This is a product that you can use on any type of hair. Since it is a translucent product with a very fine mist a lot of people with dark hair really liked it. Normally that is a bit of a deciding factor because they normally only work for certain hair colors without showing up drastically.

  • It will add volume to thin hair and keep your hair from falling flat! You really only need it right at the roots where your hair gets oily the most. It will not only absorb the oils, but it will also help give your roots a boost. This is ideal for me when I style my hair and want to make it last.

  • It is also safe for color treated hair and will help you preserve the color even longer. This is something I’m really interested in. If you dye your hair an unnatural color or even a red, it fades quickly with constant washes. By using Amika you don’t have to wash your hair as often and your color will last longer!

Social Proof

Amika is one of those products you can’t help but love. It’s such great quality and certainly worth the price for most people. It smells great, is made with good ingredients, is cruelty free, absorbs oils and provides a boost to the roots. The customers are really the ones who let me know just how great it was! Most of them weren’t having luck with a lot of other dry shampoos. They either didn’t absorb the oils properly, left an obnoxious white residue or made their hair feel even dirtier than when they first started. Overall it is definitely a hit for anyone who has had these issues in the past.

But I should mention that not all the customers were very impressed. If they were just trying this one out to see the difference, they weren’t always impressed. If they normally used a cheaper product that did the trick, they almost always ended up sticking with it. They just didn’t see the point in paying extra when they didn’t see a huge difference.

Alternatives

Since this is one of our pricier options, I wanted to throw in a few alternative options. After learning more about this product, I’m really interested. But price has always been a big deal for me. I’m just very frugal and don’t like spending much money on things when there are cheaper options. That being said, Amika is still super tempting and I might get it once to see what it’s like. But in case you aren’t as impressed, here are three of our favorites!

  • Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo

We reviewed the Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Dry Shampoo in the beginning of this list. This is their other option. It is such a great brand, there’s really no wonder it made the list twice! The other smelled of coconut which was great for some people and overwhelming for others. This is a more neutral scent! This one also comes in a 2-pack for a great price!

Who Would Buy This Product

If you are more sensitive to scents this could certainly be a better option for you! Everyone seems to love the way it freshens up their hair and absorbs the oils. While also providing texture and volume. This is a nice alternative if you want something that is more neutral and straight to the point. No frills or special features, just very basic and straight to the point.

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak vs Amika: Dry Shampoo Comparison

  • Not Your Mother’s has a simple and fresh scent

  • Amika does not contain aluminum

  • Both can be used on all hair colors and types

  • Both add volume and texture while absorbing unwanted oils

  • Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak is much more affordable

While this might not be everyone’s absolute favorite product but it’s straightforward and such a time saver. It is easy to use, the smell won’t be overpowering and you can get ready in a pinch. No need for any sticky hairspray when you’re just trying to get a little volume! If you’re interested, you can find Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo on Amazon!

  • Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

As I said before, I’ve always been more of a price oriented person and I was a little critical of this one as well. But to my surprise there were a lot of happy customers here as well! It comes in a 4oz can for a steep price. But customers are really down to try anything as long as it does what it promises and Living Proof delivers! This will absorb oils, dirt and odor, without leaving behind that frustrating residue. It also has a really light scent that nearly everyone likes. This is similar to Amika because it is one of those products that people don’t mind paying extra because it really works!

Who Should Buy This Product

A few interesting reviews I saw were from people who have dreads. I never thought about how useful dry shampoo could be if that was the case! But they really enjoyed this product because it was easy to avoid a white residue. When you have dreads I imagine that can be hard to get rid of. It isn’t like you can just brush it out. But other than that, this worked for a lot of customers who don’t normally have much luck with  dry shampoos. If you’ve ever had any issues and wish you could find something that really works, this might be just the thing!

Living Proof vs Amika: Dry Shampoo Comparison

  • Amika does not contain aluminum

  • Both absorb oils, sweat and odor

  • Both won’t leave a white powdery residue

  • Living Proof has a fresh but subtle smell

  • Both add texture and volume

I know this is another high priced item from our list, but once again customers say it’s so worth it! In all reality, the customers are the ones to listen to when it comes to these items. They loved the refreshing scent and the fact that it actually worked very well. Some preferred this over many other products because it won’t leave residue and it lasts all day. It lasts longer than you’d think, absorbs the oils very well and helps you save time getting ready! If you’re interested in trying Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo you can find it on Amazon!

  • Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo

Moroccan oil has certainly come to be more popular these days. I had never even heard of it growing up. Now you can find products with keratin, moroccan oil, coconut oil or even argan oil. They all have great benefits and leave your hair feeling so soft and healthy. Moroccanoil dry shampoo is a little on the expensive side, but all the customers say it is well worth the price. It is meant more for light hair and is a very lightweight product that will last all day!

Who Should Buy This Product

This product is more of an alternative for light hair colors. It will easily leave a white residue in dark hair. They do have options for dark hair that you may want to consider. I thought it would be a great alternative option if you have light hair and like the idea of a dry shampoo that was made for your hair color! It smells good, as long as you like to smell of moroccan oil and it has a long lasting effect. It also is perfect if you have been hoping for something that won’t leave your hair feeling chalky and gross!

Moroccanoil vs Amika: Dry Shampoo Comparison

  • Both will leave your hair feeling soft and manageable

  • They are about the same price

  • Moroccanoil is for light hair

  • Amika can be used on all hair colors

  • Moroccanoil will last all day

While this one is pricey but it is a great product. There were so many rave reviews I was almost tempted to try it out for myself. It does leave a residue, but it can be easily worked in so it is no longer visible. It also leave your hair so soft and manageable that it’s hard to believe that you used dry shampoo in the first place! For me, that alone is worth the price! If you’re interested in checking this one out for yourself you can find Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo on Amazon!

Conclusion

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo is definitely a customer favorite. The only issue with this product is the price. Less people are less likely to try it unless they really haven’t had much luck with any other products. But for those who have tried it, this is the best dry shampoo they’ve ever used. There are just so many perks to this product, it’s kind of hard not to want to try it out for yourself! It is cruelty free and contains great ingredients, which is a huge deal with most hair products. It will absorb oils, dirt and odor. But most of all, it feels good in your hair. Most people who aren’t a fan of dry shampoo actually just haven’t found the right brand. Most leave your hair looking grey from the residue, feel heavy or sticky or just make your hair feel gross. Not exactly what you want when you’re just trying to look clean. But Amika really meets your needs. You not only look clean, but you feel clean. That is a tall order and not a lot of dry shampoos have managed to pull it off.

There are just so many uses for this. It’s great if you’re a new mom, go on extended camping trips, have naturally oily hair or even have dry hair that gets worse when you wash it constantly. Dry shampoo will help in all of those situations! It will certainly make getting ready so much easier. I personally want to get something to extend the life of my color. I havent dyed my hair yet, but I know that when I do making the color last will be an ongoing battle. Amika dry shampoo would honestly be the perfect way to take some time between washes. But I’ll still look fresh and ready for anything!

So if you have been having a lot of trouble finding the right dry shampoo, this one comes highly recommended. Not just from women, but men too! So if you’re as interested as I am to see what the hype is all about, you can find Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo on Amazon!
