10 Best Dry Shampoo Options for Fresh, Voluminous Hair

There are mornings when washing, drying, and styling my hair simply isn’t happening. That’s exactly when a good dry shampoo earns its place in my bathroom cabinet.

The best dry shampoos can soak up excess oil, freshen roots, revive limp hair, add texture, and help stretch a hairstyle for another day or two. They’re particularly handy if you have oily roots, fine hair that quickly goes flat, a carefully styled blowout you don’t want to wash away, or simply a busy morning ahead.

But dry shampoos are definitely not all alike.

Some leave behind a noticeable white powder. Others make hair feel stiff, gritty, or strangely heavier than before. And then there are those rare formulas that make me wonder why my hair suddenly looks as though I’ve actually put some effort into it.

I’ve narrowed the enormous choice down to 10 of the best dry shampoo options, with picks for oily hair, fine hair, blondes, brunettes, sensitive scalps, budget shoppers, and anyone who wants their hair to feel genuinely fresh rather than simply perfumed.

10 Best Dry Shampoo Options for Fresh, Voluminous Hair

1. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo

Best overall

View on Amazon.com

If I wanted one dry shampoo that came closest to giving hair that freshly washed look and feel, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean would be high on my list.

Instead of simply loading the roots with powder, the formula is designed to absorb oil and sweat while leaving the hair softer and shinier. Living Proof says it also helps balance scalp sebum and leaves less visible or textured residue than a traditional dry shampoo.

That makes it particularly appealing if you dislike that chalky, slightly gritty feeling some dry shampoos leave behind.

I also like this one for keeping a blowout going. If I’ve spent time styling my hair, washing it again after a day or two seems such a waste.

Why I like it:

Excellent oil absorption
Hair stays relatively soft
Minimal visible residue
Good for extending blowouts
Adds freshness without making hair overly powdery

Possible downside: It’s considerably more expensive than drugstore dry shampoos.

Best for: Anyone looking for a premium dry shampoo that feels less like traditional dry shampoo.

2. Batiste Original Dry Shampoo

Best budget dry shampoo

View on Amazon.com

Batiste is probably one of the first brands most of us think of when someone mentions dry shampoo — and there’s a reason it has remained so popular.

The Original formula uses rice starch to absorb oil and quickly refresh greasy-looking roots.

This isn’t necessarily the most sophisticated formula on my list, but it does exactly what many people want dry shampoo to do: it makes oily hair look presentable again very quickly.

I find Batiste especially useful when volume is disappearing at the roots. A little product worked through the hair can instantly create more body and grip.

Why I like it:

Very affordable
Excellent oil absorption
Widely available
Adds noticeable volume
Works quickly

Possible downside: It’s easier to over-apply than some premium formulas, and darker hair may need extra brushing to remove visible residue.

Best for: Anyone who wants an inexpensive dry shampoo that simply gets the job done.

3. Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk

Best gentle dry shampoo

View on Amazon.com

If your scalp isn’t particularly fond of heavy styling products, Klorane’s oat-based dry shampoo is worth considering.

It has developed something of a cult following because it manages to freshen greasy roots without leaving hair feeling excessively stiff.

I particularly like this sort of formula for people whose hair is dry through the lengths but oily around the roots. That’s a frustrating combination because aggressive oil-control products can sometimes make the rest of the hair feel even drier.

Klorane provides that useful middle ground: enough absorption to refresh your hair without creating masses of texture.

Why I like it:

Gentle feel
Good for dry lengths and oily roots
Less gritty than many dry shampoos
Suitable for frequent occasional touch-ups
Hair remains relatively soft

Possible downside: Very oily hair may need something more heavy-duty.

Best for: Normal-to-dry hair and anyone who dislikes aggressively powdery dry shampoo.

4. Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Best for oily roots

View on Amazon.com

If your roots seem to become greasy almost immediately after washing, Amika’s Perk Up range is designed for stronger oil control.

The thing I particularly like about Amika dry shampoos is the combination of oil absorption and styling ability. Instead of simply trying to disguise grease, they can give flat roots a useful lift too.

This makes Amika especially handy on second- or third-day hair when the problem isn’t just oil — it’s that slightly deflated look hair gets after sleeping on it.

Spraying a little at the roots, leaving it to work and then massaging it through can revive the entire hairstyle.

Why I like it:

Strong oil absorption
Adds body at the roots
Useful on second- and third-day hair
Works well on fine hair
Pleasant salon-product feel

Possible downside: The fragrance may be more noticeable than you’ll want if you’re sensitive to scented hair products.

Best for: Oily roots and hair that becomes flat between washes.

5. Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Light Tones or Dark Tones

Best dry shampoo for blondes and brunettes

View on Amazon.com

One of my biggest complaints about dry shampoo is that mysterious grey-white haze it can leave behind — especially on dark hair.

Moroccanoil has taken a sensible approach by producing separate versions for Light Tones and Dark Tones.

Both use rice starch to absorb excess oil and buildup. The Light Tones version has subtle violet undertones designed to counter brassiness in blonde hair, while the Dark Tones version is designed to disappear more naturally into brunette hair.

That makes this one of my favorite options when hair color is a major consideration.

Why I like it:

Versions for both light and dark hair
Rice-starch oil absorption
Helps avoid obvious white residue
Leaves hair feeling relatively silky
Light version can help reduce the appearance of brassiness

Possible downside: It’s more expensive than many supermarket or drugstore formulas.

Best for: Blonde, highlighted, brown, or black hair where visible dry-shampoo residue is a problem.

6. Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo

Best dry shampoo for fine hair

View on Amazon.com

Anyone with fine hair knows that oil isn’t the only issue.

Once fine hair becomes even slightly greasy, it can collapse completely against the scalp.

That’s why I like a dry shampoo that gives me oil absorption and some lift.

Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo is a particularly interesting option for fine or easily weighed-down hair because it’s intended to freshen the roots without creating an overly heavy powder coating.

Used sparingly, it can give roots a cleaner, airier appearance while helping restore volume.

Why I like it:

Great for fine hair
Adds root lift
Doesn’t require enormous amounts of product
Useful for extending styled hair
Salon-quality option

Possible downside: Definitely on the premium end of the price spectrum.

Best for: Fine, flat or easily weighed-down hair.

7. Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo

Best alternative to a traditional aerosol

View on Amazon.com

Not everyone loves aerosol dry shampoo.

If that’s you, Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo provides an interesting alternative.

Powder formulas give you much more control over exactly where the product goes. Rather than covering half your bathroom in a cloud of dry shampoo, you can concentrate the product around particularly oily sections of the scalp.

The downside is that there is a small learning curve. You really don’t need much.

I find powder formulas work best when I apply a tiny amount, wait briefly, massage thoroughly and then brush the excess through.

Why I like it:

Non-traditional application
Easy to target oily areas
Useful for travel
A little goes a long way
Good if you don’t like aerosol sprays

Possible downside: Applying too much powder can leave visible residue.

Best for: Anyone looking for an aerosol-free alternative.

8. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo

Best affordable everyday dry shampoo

View on Amazon.com

Sometimes I don’t need my dry shampoo to reinvent hair care. I just want something affordable that I can spray on my roots before running out of the house.

That’s where Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak fits in.

It’s a straightforward everyday dry shampoo designed to absorb excess oil and refresh hair between washes.

I particularly like products like this for keeping at work, in a gym bag, or in the bathroom for those mornings when washing your hair simply isn’t going to fit into the schedule.

Why I like it:

Budget-friendly
Good everyday option
Works well for quick touch-ups
Useful for oily roots
Easy addition to a basic hair routine

Possible downside: If you want that almost freshly washed feeling, a premium formula such as Living Proof may perform better.

Best for: Everyday use on a budget.

9. Dove Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo

Best for volume

View on Amazon.com

If your hair looks greasy and flat, Dove Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo tackles the two problems together.

This is the sort of dry shampoo I like applying around my crown before working it through with my fingertips.

It gives the roots a little more grip, which can make fine or limp hair appear noticeably fuller.

That’s also useful when styling. Hair that’s freshly washed can sometimes be almost too silky to hold an updo or ponytail properly. A light mist of dry shampoo can create some useful texture.

Why I like it:

Affordable
Adds volume
Helps revive limp hair
Useful as a styling product
Good option for fine hair

Possible downside: If you already have thick or very dry hair, the added texture may not be something you need.

Best for: Fine, flat and limp hair.

10. OUAI Super Dry Shampoo

Best for seriously oily hair

View on Amazon.com

There are ordinary oily roots and then there are those days when your hair seems determined to advertise the fact that wash day was yesterday.

OUAI Super Dry Shampoo is aimed more toward the latter.

It’s designed to absorb oil, dirt and sweat while giving the roots some extra volume.

That makes it particularly useful after exercise, during warm weather or when you’re trying to get one more day out of your hair before washing it.

I would start with a light application, though. Stronger dry shampoos don’t need to be applied with quite the enthusiasm you might use with a lighter everyday formula.

Why I like it:

Strong oil absorption
Adds volume
Good for sweaty roots
Useful for extending wash day
Works well on very oily hair

Possible downside: The stronger fragrance and more noticeable texture won’t suit everyone.

Best for: Very oily hair or post-workout refreshes.

What Does Dry Shampoo Actually Do?

Despite the name, dry shampoo isn’t really shampoo in the traditional sense.

Most formulas contain absorbent ingredients such as starches that soak up oil around the roots. This makes greasy hair look cleaner and less shiny.

What dry shampoo doesn’t do is physically wash dirt, dead skin cells, microorganisms and accumulated product away with water.

The American Academy of Dermatology makes this distinction very clearly: dry shampoo absorbs oil but doesn’t actually replace washing your hair and scalp with regular shampoo and water.

So I think of dry shampoo as a wash extender, not a permanent alternative to shampoo.

How to Use Dry Shampoo Properly

Technique makes an enormous difference.

I’ve found that spraying half a can over my head five minutes before leaving the house is possibly the worst way to use dry shampoo.

Here’s the method I prefer:

Start with completely dry hair. Dry shampoo isn’t designed for wet roots.
Shake aerosol cans thoroughly. The absorbent ingredients need to be properly distributed.
Divide your hair into sections. Concentrate on the areas that actually look greasy rather than coating your entire head.
Hold the can away from your scalp. Around 6–10 inches is common, although I always follow the instructions on the specific product. Living Proof, for example, recommends approximately 6–10 inches.
Don’t immediately rub it in. Give the absorbent powder a little time to work.
Massage your roots. Use your fingertips to distribute the product.
Brush through if necessary. This helps remove excess powder and visible residue.
Add more only if you need it.

The biggest mistake is usually using far too much product during the first application.

A Dry Shampoo Trick I Love: Apply It Before Bed

This sounds slightly strange until you try it.

Rather than waiting until my hair looks oily in the morning, I can apply a small amount of dry shampoo to the roots before going to bed.

It then has hours to absorb oil while I sleep.

Living Proof actually recommends overnight application as one way of allowing its absorbent powders additional time to work.

By morning, I can massage the roots, brush through the hair and use considerably less additional product.

It’s particularly useful if you know your hair tends to become oily overnight.

How Often Should You Use Dry Shampoo?

Dry shampoo is incredibly convenient, but I wouldn’t keep layering it onto my scalp indefinitely.

Dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology recommend washing your hair with shampoo and water after approximately one or two dry-shampoo applications rather than continually replacing conventional washing with dry shampoo.

Regular washing removes accumulated dry shampoo along with oil, dead skin cells and other scalp buildup.

If your scalp becomes itchy, sore, flaky or irritated when using dry shampoo, I’d stop using that product rather than trying to cover the problem with even more of it.

How to Choose the Best Dry Shampoo for Your Hair

For oily hair

Look for stronger oil-absorbing formulas.

Try: OUAI Super Dry Shampoo or Amika Perk Up.

For fine hair

Choose something that absorbs oil while creating root lift without weighing the hair down.

Try: Olaplex No.4D or Dove Volume & Fullness.

For blonde hair

A formula created specifically for light hair can help prevent the roots looking dull.

Try: Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Light Tones.

Its violet undertones are designed to help combat brassiness.

For dark hair

White residue is often far more visible on brown and black hair.

Try: Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Dark Tones.

For a sensitive or dry-feeling scalp

I would look for a gentler formula and avoid piling on huge quantities.

Try: Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk.

For maximum freshness

If you dislike the powdery feeling associated with traditional dry shampoo, a more sophisticated formula may be worth the extra money.

Try: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean.

Does Dry Shampoo Cause Hair Loss?

Using dry shampoo occasionally isn’t the same thing as causing hair loss.

However, continuously coating the scalp without properly washing it isn’t a good idea.

The American Academy of Dermatology warns that allowing dry shampoo to accumulate can contribute to scalp problems and that buildup may potentially contribute to breakage or shedding.

The sensible approach is fairly simple: use dry shampoo to buy yourself an extra day between washes, then properly cleanse your scalp.

Can You Use Dry Shampoo on Clean Hair?

Absolutely — and this is one of my favorite ways to use it.

A small amount of dry shampoo on clean hair can:

Add texture
Give fine hair more body
Create grip for braids and updos
Prevent roots becoming oily quite so quickly
Add lift around the crown

Just remember that you’re using it as a styling product in this situation, so you only need a tiny amount.

Dry Shampoo FAQs

1. Is dry shampoo bad for your hair?

Occasional use is generally fine for most people. Problems are more likely when dry shampoo repeatedly replaces washing and product accumulates on the scalp. Regular shampooing with water is still necessary.

2. Can I use dry shampoo every day?

I wouldn’t continually layer dry shampoo onto my scalp day after day without washing. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing with conventional shampoo after around one or two dry-shampoo applications.

3. Should I use dry shampoo at night or in the morning?

Both work, but applying a small amount before bed can give the absorbent ingredients more time to deal with oil overnight.

4. Why does dry shampoo turn my hair white?

Most dry shampoos contain pale absorbent powders such as rice starch. Using too much or spraying too close to the roots can leave visible residue.

Let the product sit briefly, massage it thoroughly and brush through.

For brunette hair, a formula made specifically for dark tones can help.

5. Can dry shampoo add volume?

Yes. By absorbing oil and adding texture around the roots, many dry shampoos make limp hair look fuller.

Batiste even produces texturizing formulas specifically designed to add grip as well as absorb oil.

6. Does dry shampoo actually clean your hair?

Not in the same way shampoo and water do.

It mainly absorbs oil and makes hair look cleaner. Regular shampoo removes the accumulated oils, dead skin cells, microorganisms and styling products from the scalp.

My Final Thoughts

Dry shampoo is one of those beauty products I don’t appreciate properly until the exact morning I desperately need it.

For the best all-round performance, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo would be my premium pick. It does a particularly good job of refreshing hair without leaving that unmistakably powdery dry-shampoo feeling.

For an affordable everyday option, Batiste Original remains very difficult to beat.

If white residue is your biggest frustration, I’d look at Moroccanoil Light Tones or Dark Tones, while oily-hair sufferers may prefer the stronger absorption offered by Amika or OUAI.

The real trick, though, isn’t simply finding the strongest dry shampoo possible.

It’s finding one that absorbs enough oil to refresh your roots while still allowing your hair to move, shine and feel like hair.

Used properly — and alongside regular shampooing rather than instead of it — a good dry shampoo can easily become one of the most useful products in your hair-care routine.
