White spots on teeth, especially on front ones, are a very common issue. People who have them are eager to eliminate these stains because smiling is an important part of our daily communication. When we interact with other people, we don’t want to make a bad first impression. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and even get rid of these spots.

What Are White Spots On Teeth?

White spots on teeth are a sign of mineral loss from your enamel. This is a protective shield that covers your teeth’s surface. Doctors refer to this problem as hypo calcification. It can also be a sign of tooth decay, so you better be aware when these spots appear. Cavities might start forming on these white areas.

What Causes White Spots on Teeth?

There are plenty of reasons that might cause white spots on teeth:

  • Dry mouth. When your mouth doesn’t have enough saliva, bacteria starts growing and damaging your teeth. This happens because the pH level is not neutral anymore.
  • Eating too many acid foods. Some candies, as well as lemons and vinegar, can create these white spots on teeth. Also, sodas and certain beverages can attack your enamel and cause tooth decay.
  • Not having a good oral hygiene. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, plaque will appear on their surface. This can damage your enamel and cause white stains.
  • Certain teeth whitening strips. Some strips aren’t good for your teeth because they are made of plastic. Using these materials can damage your teeth, especially if you leave them on for a longer period.
  • White spots on teeth from braces. Braces are not the ones that cause stains, but they make your brushing process a lot more difficult. Classic brushing is not enough. You will also have to use special flossing and cleaning products.

How to Get Rid of White Spots on Teeth

brushing teeth is a form of preventing white spots

Homemade Remedies

  • Remineralizing toothpaste. Mix calcium powder with baking soda and coconut oil. Brush your teeth with this combination for about 2 or 3 times per day.
  • Tooth powder. Instead of using toothpaste, you can make powder. Combine calcium powder with bentonite clay and baking soda. Apply it on your teeth using your fingers.
  • Green tea. Rinse your mouth with green tea for a couple of times per day. It is a homeopathic remedy that helps you get rid of white spots on teeth.
  • Coconut oil. Put a bit of oil in your mouth and swish it all over your teeth. After spitting it out, rinse your mouth with warm water.

Dentist Appointments

  • Professional teeth bleaching. Your dentist will use fluoride to strengthen and whiten your teeth.
  • Abrasion techniques. This is another common method to get rid of white stains, and it works by removing these spots with an abrasive material.

Prevention Methods

  • Have a good oral hygiene. Brush and floss at least two times per day.
  • Avoid beverages and foods that cause tooth decay. Sugary drinks and acid foods can damage your enamel.
  • Consume leafy vegetables and foods that contain calcium. All these help remineralize your teeth.
  • Drink more water. Keeping yourself hydrated prevents white spots on teeth and it helps your body function better.

Final Thoughts

White spots on teeth are not only an issue of aesthetics but also a tooth decay sign. These stains are frequently met. If you have this kind of problem, don’t hesitate to consult a dentist who will recommend you the best treatment for your needs.
