Your custom toothpick painted nails can look professionally done if you use the right techniques. Start with clean nails, apply thin coats of nail polish, and finish off with a clear topcoat.
To help you get started, let us go over these steps in more detail below.
STEP 1
Prepping And Cleaning Your Nails
It’s important to always begin by removing any nail polish that might be left on your nails. Old polish can prevent new coats from adequately sticking to your nails.
You can do this by using a nail polish remover such as Beauty 360 Nail Polish Remover from your local drugstore.
After removing all polish, you may also want to shape your nails with filing, but it’s not required.
Finally, make sure your nails are clean, with nothing left behind.
You’ll want to thoroughly wash and dry them on a clean towel or bath cloth. Even if you use a non-acetone product, washing your nails before you begin is just as important.
STEP 2
Tools You’ll Need
The best thing you’ll notice as you learn how to do nail art with a toothpick is that there is very little involved.
However, you will need to grab yourself some toothpicks!
While it may help to find toothpicks with both blunt and sharp ends, it’s entirely up to you. You don’t really need to have a dual-sided pick.
You can achieve most designs using an everyday toothpick like this 4.3 out of 5.0 star rated set from Amazon.
Prepare a paper plate by covering it with kitchen foil to make a palette for your polish and set it aside. Once you choose your colors, you’ll need to pour dime-sized pools of each color onto the foiled plate.
By doing this, it will help you see and reach the colors without risking a tipped over bottle of polish.

STEP 3
Choose Your Palette
Depending on what your design is, it helps to pick out all the colors you plan to use before you begin. The last thing you want is to get stuck without the proper tone in the middle of your creation.
But nail polish comes in every pigment that you could imagine, so it should be easy to find the right colors.
Although it may sound tempting, you’ll want to stay away from quick-dry nail polish. It’s typically dehydrating and can often leave your nails feeling tacky and sticky.
We recommend going with a full set, like this fantastic Modelones Gel Nail Polish Set.
This set comes with almost every color you may need, plus a few fun glittery choices. The quality of this nail polish set is apparent with its high rating of 4.1 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon.
But whichever you decide to use, it’s essential to make sure that the polish is free of formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate.
These ingredients are unhealthy if you’re exposed to them over a prolonged period of time.
STEP 4
Application
Before you start painting your creation, it’s good to apply a base coat to your nails. It might take you some extra time, but using a base coat will make your color pop. It can also help prevent potential staining from some polish pigments.
Although most sets include a base coat, many customers prefer using a primer like OPI Nail Lacquer, which receives a top-quality rating of 4.7 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon.
While learning how to do nail art with a toothpick, it’s best if you use three strokes to apply the polish. Starting at the base of your nail, stroke the brush to the left, the right, and then down the center.
To get your polish to dry faster, make sure to apply your paint in thin coats.
Once the base color is dry, take your toothpick and dip one end of it into the polish. Without rushing, take your time and carefully draw the design onto your nails.
Dot the toothpick over your nails to create a polka-dotted look, or drag it up and down to make stripes.
Use the pick as a tool to make hearts, diamonds, or other shapes similar to drawing with a pencil.
But remember to refrain from pushing too hard, or you might scratch off the base color accidentally.

STEP 5
Protecting Your Nail Designs
Once your work of art is complete, you’ll want to coat your nails with a protective layer of clear polish. The clear coat is available in both matte or gloss, depending on what type of finish you want.
One should always take care of the most profound things in such creative works. To avoid smudging your design with the top coat, it’s essential to wait until the polish has thoroughly dried.
When your nails have had the time to dry completely, then finish with the clear coat of polish. If necessary, use two or three thin layers to make sure that the surface of your nails is chip resistant.
In addition to the nail polish, customers also enjoy using the Modelones set of matte and gloss clear and base coats.
You can’t argue with the results, with customers rewarding this nail polish coat set a 4.5 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon.

My Tips and Tricks
If you’ve ever looked at nail art online and thought, “There’s no way I could do that,” I’ve got good news for you.
One of my favorite tools for nail art is not a fancy brush or an expensive kit – it’s a plain old toothpick! Toothpicks make nail art so much more approachable for beginners and are so much fun to use to create easy, creative nail art in the comfort of your home.
I’ve had a ton of questions over the years about how to create nail art with a toothpick so I’ve gathered up the most common FAQs and the answers I’ve learned from plenty of practice (and a few happy accidents!).
Yes, you can do nail art with just a toothpick.
Certainly! The first time I tried it I was surprised. Use a wooden toothpick to make dots, hearts, flowers, swirls, marble effects, tiny leaves, stars and simple patterns. It’s cheap, and easy to get and great if you’re just starting out.
1. What sort of toothpick do you use?
I normally use regular wooden toothpicks as they have a fine point which is ideal for detailed work. If I want slightly bigger dots, I’ll gently trim the end or use the wider end of the toothpick.
2. Do you need a special nail polish?
Not necessarily. I usually wear regular nail polish. I only care about consistency. It’s tricky to create neat designs if the polish is too thick or old. A fresh smooth polish gives me the best results.
3. How to make perfect dots?
I put a little bit of polish on a piece of foil or palette, dip just the very tip of the toothpick in it, and gently touch the nail. I avoid dragging the toothpick unless I’m making a pattern.
If I have an even number of dots, I reload the toothpick with polish after a few dots.
4. Can beginner to do nail art with toothpick?
Yes, definitely. Actually I think it’s one of the easiest ways to start learning nail art. Easy beginner friendly simple polka dots, daisies, hearts and little accent elements that don’t need perfect precision.
The more I practice, the more steady my hand gets.
5. How to make a flower with a toothpick?
One of my favorite designs is a simple daisy.
I draw five little dots in a circle and place a contrasting dot in the middle. It is fast, cute and works perfectly for short and long nails.
6. How do you do marble nails with a toothpick?
Yes! I put tiny drops of different polish colours in while they are still wet, and then drag the toothpick lightly through them in swirly motions. This will blend the colours together for a lovely marbled effect.
The secret is not to overwork the polish.
7. Why am I getting smudges?
This is when I usually don’t give each coat enough time to dry before applying another.
I have come to realize that patience is everything. Waiting a little longer between layers keeps the colours crisp and prevents accidental smudges.
8. How do I keep the polish from drying on the toothpick?
I wipe the tip on a tissue or cotton pad between colours and replace the toothpick when it is covered in dried polish.
Toothpicks are inexpensive. I have no qualms about getting a fresh one.
9. Can I draw straight lines?
Yes, but it requires a steady hand. I drag the toothpick lightly across the wet polish, using only the weight of my hand.
For very long, straight lines a striping brush is easier, but toothpicks still do a surprisingly good job for short details.
10. What nail polish colors look good together?
I like to mix colours that are in good contrast to each other, i.e.:
- Black and white
- Pink and gold
- Navy and silver
- Red and white
- Lavender and yellow
- Nude and rose gold
- Mint green and white
The high contrast is excellent for making small designs stand out.
11. What can I do to keep my hand steady?
I work with both hands on a table. Sometimes I also rest my little finger on the surface to support my painting hand. This gives me a lot more control over little details.
12. Can you can use a toothpick for gel polish.
Yes. In fact, gel polish gives me a bit more working time before curing under the lamp. I do my design and then cure it according to the gel nail polish instructions.
13. How can I fix mistakes?
I use a small angled brush or a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover and carefully go around the edges before the polish is fully dry.
Small corrections can really make a difference to the finished look.
14. Do I need a base coat?
Always.
Base coat protects my natural nails from staining and gives the polish something to hold onto, which helps my manicure last longer.
15. Do I need a topcoat?
I never miss it.
A nice top coat smooths out the design, adds shine, protects the artwork from chips, and helps the whole thing last several extra days.
16. Can I mix and match different nail art techniques?
Absolutely! I love putting dots, swirls, flowers, hearts and little leaves in one manicure. Simple techniques can be combined to create designs that appear much more detailed than they really are.
17. What if my toothpick scrapes my polish?
This typically means I’m pressing too hard. I tell myself: “Touch as lightly as possible.” The toothpick should glide through wet polish, not dig into it.
18. How long do I let the nails dry?
I try to wait at least 20-30 minutes before normal use of my hands, but longer is even better. Even if polish feels dry to the touch, it can still dent easily from underneath.
19. Are toothpick nail designs good for short nails?
Yes! I actually think a lot of toothpick designs look especially cute on shorter nails. Mini flowers, dots, minimalist hearts, stars, and fine accents all look good without overpowering the nail.
20. What’s the simplest design to begin with?
If you are new to toothpick nail art I would recommend starting with:
- Polka dots
- Daisy flowers
- Tiny hearts
- Simple swirls
- Colourful confetti dots
- Ladybugs
- Minimalist stars
These designs are forgiving, fun and a great confidence booster.
I love showing that you don’t have to have fancy tools or be a professional to do beautiful nail art.
With a simple toothpick I can create delicate flowers, playful polka dots, elegant marble swirls or colourful abstract designs – the possibilities are endless!
My secret is to enjoy process instead of trying to perfect it. Each and every manicure makes me a little better.
And even the not-so-great designs have their own charms.
So grab your favourite nail polish colours, get a toothpick and have fun experimenting – you might be surprised at what you can do with such a simple household item.
