Eyebrow Mapping: What It Is + Tips from Specialists

June 27, 2018 by Jennifer Scott

There is one thing that everyone should be aware of and accept when it comes to eyebrows. There is no such thing as the “perfect brow”. In fact, there are a lot of things to take into account like how thick or thin they should be, or how arched or flat they should look. The idea is that eyebrows are a very personal thing and each person has their unique brows which, in turn, have their own rules. So, there is not something that applies to everyone. However, there are techniques that can help you find the perfect eyebrow shape for you. In this article, we will talk about eyebrow mapping. What it is and how it’s done, according to a very big specialist in this domain.
Brows are something that should not only fit your preference, but your face shape too. So, in order to make sure that we will be giving you the best tips, we have asked Benefit Cosmetics head make-up artist and brow expert Lisa Potter-Dixon for help. She will offer you the best tips when it comes to eyebrow mapping and tell you what exactly this means. Here we go!

Eyebrow mapping

Eyebrow mapping is exactly what the name suggests: a technique that will help you find the perfect brow shape for your face. You can map your face on your own using only a makeup brush. Hold it at the angle, starting from the corner of your nose through the inner corner of the eye. Where the handle of the brush lands, that’s where your brow should start.

To find out where the arch should be, do the same thing with the brush, but hold it through the center of the eye, looking straight ahead. That is where the arch of your brow should be, Potter-Dixon says.

Finally, hold the makeup brush through the outer corner of the eye. That’s the spot where your brow should end. You can now use these marks as a template and fill in your eyebrows accordingly.

Eyebrow color

Not many people know how to correctly choose the color of their eyebrow when shopping for brow products. The idea is to go as close as possible to the natural color of the eyebrows and not the hair on your head. Usually, that’s not your natural color at all and if you do that, your eyebrows will look completely out of place.

Eyebrow products

But what products should I use for my eyebrows? Well, Potter-Dixon recommends a pencil and a clear gel for a day to day look. However, for a night out, she prefers to switch to an eyebrow gel because it lasts a lot longer. No matter what style of eyebrow you have or what products you use, always apply a clear gel over them. This will keep them in place for longer and offer them that professional look.
