The Opal Hair Trend: Instagram’s Latest Beauty Look

March 29, 2018 by Jennifer Scott

The latest Instagram craze, the opal hair trend, can be called the lovechild of the gray hair trend and the rainbow one. This new trend is as beautiful as it is mesmerizing, drawing inspiration from the sea and imagining a color of mermaid hair (which is also a thing now). For those who may not be familiar with the term “opal”, it is actually a stone comprised of a mix of iridescent purples, blue and pinks combined with pearl. Hair colorist Aura Friedman is one of the first people who created this look and contributed to its explosion on social media.

It’s worth mentioning that Aura got the idea for the opal hair trend years ago, while she was experimenting with pastels. Because opal is also her birth stone, she thought why not? Initially, she started doing it for Lady Gaga’s wigs, but she never used them. The basic idea that makes this color unique is layering. The hair should look a different color from different angles. There are layers upon layers of different colors which sit upon each other creating that gemstone-like effect that’s so in right now. So, want to know more about this new trend and draw inspiration from some of the best Instagram looks? Keep reading!

The opal hair trend

Aura says that the first thing she does when creating the opal hair is lighten it until it reaches a pearl hue. However, the hair should not be gray! After applying a toner, she then proceeds to apply the numerous layers of color. It’s all about subtlety in nuances, Aura says. The opal hair will never stand out because of its brightness, but instead, it will stand out because of it subtlety and delicate beauty.

All those different colors need to intertwine with each other perfectly, in order to create that special look. The colors starting from the roots to the ends are all different. So, no matter how you look at it, you will see a different color every time. Tilt your head to the left and you might see a little bit more of the color pink. Tilt it to the right and there’s a lot of purple. Then there’s green, and blue and so on and so forth.

It’s important to note that there are a lot of different variations to this trend, but the idea is the same. There are styles that have more pink, or more white. You can also leave your roots alone or paint them in a bright color. You can also have darker nuances in your hair, and it will still look amazing. So, for those who already had the courage to go gray, it will be very easy to achieve the opal hair. Also, this is an excellent way to refresh your yellow strands after the grey died out.
