All the Needed Supplies

When it comes to how to remove acrylic nails at home, you will need the following things:

  • A bottle of acetone.
  • A nail file (make sure it is made out of a special material; avoid the metal ones).
  • Scraper (this will come in handy when you have to remove the softened acrylic).
  • A large enough glass or metal bowl. Avoid the ones made of plastic.
  • Non-abrasive nail buffer. This will be used to remove any major ridges.
  • If necessary, Vaseline. This is an optional supply that you should use only if you have sensitive skin around your nails.

Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1

Use the nail file to remove the surface layer of gloss or nail polish top coat. You should have a gritty nail file to obtain better results. This step is important when it comes to how to remove acrylic nails at home because it creates a porous surface on your nails. This way, the acetone will break down easier and quicker.

Step 2

If you have sensitive skin, now is the time to apply some Vaseline around your nails and on your fingertips. This is a must for some of you because acetone can dry out your skin and even make it sore or painful.

Step 3

Pour acetone into the bowl, and put your fingers in it. Leave them there for about five minutes. There is also another alternative to the metal or glass bowl. You can use foils instead. Put some acetone on cotton balls and apply them on your nails. Then, wrap your fingers in aluminum foils. This time, you should wait for ten minutes before taking the foils off.

In the case in which you use a bowl with acetone, you should start seeing your acrylic turning into a jelly-like substance. When this happens, you can start gently scraping it off. If there is any acrylic left, you should soak your fingers again for five minutes.

Step 4

Use the nail file again but use one that is made of glass this time. Scrap all the acrylic off, and if there is still some left, you can even use a nail buffer. Act with care and make sure you don’t damage your nails or your skin.

Step 5

Now, you can use the same file described at step 4 to make your nail edges smoother. As a final step, you can apply a keratin treatment to protect your natural nails from further damages.
