How to Get Makeup Out of Clothes: Five Tricks

August 25, 2017 by Jennifer Scott

We’ve all been there: a smudge of lipstick on the shirt, a spot of foundation on the tank top, powder eyeshadow on the collar of a blouse. There is nothing women dread more than pulling off the perfect outfit, only to notice some smeared eyeliner or mascara on their clothes. The problem with makeup stains is that the older they get, the harder to remove they get. It happened to all women out there, and many learned that washing the said ruined outfit was not the efficient strategy they implemented. Today we will find out how to get makeup out of clothes with a few handy tricks!

1. Shaving Cream to Remove Makeup Stains

Liquid or cream foundation penetrates the clothes’ fibers fast. If you want to remove the stain quickly, apply some shaving cream on it and rub the spot gently. Shaving cream works best for oil-free foundation stains on collars or sleeves. If the stain is hard to get rid of, mix in a bit of rubbing alcohol to the shaving cream and give it another go. After you treated the shirt, throw it in the washing machine and follow the cleaning instructions.

2. Use Dish Soap for Oily Makeup

We use plenty of oily makeup, such as liquid foundation or lip-gloss, self-tan cream, and so on. The trick to removing oily makeup is to use a drop of dish soap. Remove the stain with a clean, absorbent tissue and spray a little water on the remaining of the stain. Apply a drop of high-quality dish soap on the stain and gently rub it. Let the soap do its thing for at least 15 minutes, then pat dry and clean with a dry tissue.

3. Rubbing Alcohol for Stubborn Lipstick Stains

Lipstick is a hard stain to deal with because it is waxy, oily, and pigmented in the same time. However, rubbing alcohol proves to be useful in this case. Dab the stain with a cotton ball infused with rubbing alcohol. Repeat the process until the stain disappears. Have patience; it will eventually go away. For safe measure, wash the lipstick-stained shirt after, according to the instructions.

4. Multipurpose Cleaner for Mascara and Eyeliner

Mascara and eyeliner stains are just as annoying as lipstick ones, due to their greasy consistency. For anything that is oily, try multi purpose cleaner designed to remove the grease stains in your kitchen. Pour a drop of detergent on the stain and dab the stain with a cotton ball. Make sure the stain has disappeared completely before washing the blouse as you normally do. Wash the stained outfit immediately, just to play it safe.

5. Powder Makeup and the Drier Power

How to get makeup off white shirt collar? Nothing easier: use your hair drier to remove the powder from your clothes. If you touch or brush the stain, the powder will smudge and smear all over the place and will be harder to remove. First, hard-blow the powder away with the drier from beneath the stain; secondly, remove the pigment left embedded in the shirt with a bit of rubbing alcohol. Wash the outfit in the washing machine.
