Hair Glaze vs. Hair Gloss vs Normal Dye: How Does Each Work

April 5, 2017 by Jennifer Scott

Do you want to change the look of your hair? If a while ago, one of the few ways in which you could do that was by getting it dyed, nowadays, there are many options that promise to provide you with gorgeous hair. Three of the best ones are hair glaze, hair gloss, and the traditional hair dye. Even if they have some things in common, these three hair enhancements are actually quite different. Today, we’re going to tell you how each of them works, so you can decide which one is best for your hair.

How Does Hair Glaze Work?

Hair glaze is a temporary product that provides your hair with shine. It can be both clear and pigmented, the latter being used to complement your natural hair color. If you want to understand better how it works, imagine applying a top coat on your nails to give them some shine. This is exactly what a glaze is, a top coat for your hair. Its effects only last for about two weeks, and unlike hair gloss, it doesn’t contain ammonia or peroxide.

How Does Hair Gloss Work?

Hair gloss is semi-permanent. This means it lasts more than hair glaze, but not as much as hair dye. In about 4 weeks, its effects will disappear. This product is also transparent, and its main purpose is to provide shine as well. However, it does more than that. It also closes the cuticle, fills the hair, and leaves it feeling and looking smoother. You will easily notice that when you look at how the light bounces off it. Moreover, it protects the hair, and makes your color last for a longer period of time.

How Does Hair Dye Work?

As most of you probably already know, hair dye is permanent. It works by giving our hair color, no matter the color it is at the moment. The reason why hair dye lasts longer is because the molecules of dye get embedded in the hair fiber, more precisely in its protein structure. This is what makes them hard to rinse out. Most hair dyes last about 40 shampoos, but it also depends on the brand you use. They also contain peroxide and ammonia.

Bottom Line

So, as we hope we’ve managed to prove today, hair glaze, hair gloss, and hair dye serve completely different purposes. If you want to provide your hair with a completely different color that won’t go away that soon, you should use hair dye. If you want to protect the color of your hair and help it last longer, while also providing the hair with shine, hair gloss is the perfect option. Finally, if you’re looking for a product that conditions dull hair and covers it in shine, you should definitely consider hair glaze. All of them are great hair products, so it really just depends on what you want the effect to be, and on how much you want the product to last.
