We’ve come a long way since those primordial times, it seems now when we were satisfied with simply picking up toothpaste from the shelf and going home with it. Now we want it to be all natural, not to affect any other part of our body, healthy, whitening, kid-friendly, safe for them to eat, all in one. But how do you get all these? You make your own, of course. Here are 3 DIY whitening toothpaste recipes to try at home.
1. Simple and White
Ingredients
- A quarter cup Calcium Carbonate Powder
- Half a cup MCT oil (start with a quarter and add more if it needs thinning)
- Three tablespoons of Xylitol powder
- Your favorite essential oils
How to
Your xylitol needs to be a very fine powder. If it didn’t come that way when you bought it, work on it a little more. Put all the ingredients together either in a bowl if you plan on mixing them by hand or in a blender. Incorporate them. Store the product in a glass jar, in your bathroom, exactly as you do your normal toothpaste.
2. Traditional DIY Whitening Toothpaste
Ingredients
- Two tablespoons of Bentonite Clay
- A pinch of salt
- An essential oil of your choice
- One tablespoon of melted coconut oil
- Liquid Stevia (make it as sweet as you want)
- Two capsules Activated Charcoal
- A quarter teaspoon of ground cloves
- Two tablespoons of water
How to
Simply mix all the ingredients until you get a paste and you’re done. Do not use a metal or plastic container for mixing or storing, as the paste will absorb its toxins. Store it in a glass or porcelain jar. If you want to make the toothpaste kid friendly and you believe they might swallow some of it, then replace the essential oil with its natural counterpart. For example, if you used peppermint oil, use crushed mint leaves instead. Or you can forget about the oils altogether. Then the toothpaste will taste like sweet cloves, which is also delicious in itself.

3. Spices to the Rescue
Ingredients
- Two tablespoons of Bentonite Clay
- Four tablespoons of coconut oil
- A pinch of salt
- A tablespoon of xylitol
- Your favorite mix of essential oils
- One teaspoon of turmeric
- One teaspoon of your favorite spices
How to
Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them until you get a smooth paste the consistency of your typical toothpaste. You can also add a bit of stevia if you want to make it sweeter or if you have children. It’s going to be easier to convince them to brush their teeth of the toothpaste is sweet and delicious. As per the salt, you can always use Himalayan pink salt.
