What is the Curly Girl Method, How to Follow It (and Why Some Don’t)

May 18, 2018 by Jennifer Scott

The famous curly girl method has been inspired by Lorraine Massey’s popular book Curly Girl: The Handbook. For those unfamiliar with it, it is a hair care method destined for girls with naturally curly hair. The main idea that it follows is for women to trade in certain damaging habits, like heat styling and shampooing, for a healthier hair care routine which only uses gel and conditioner. As interesting as it may sound, not many people know all the details about this method. This is why, in this article, we will provide the answer to the question what is the curly girl method, tell you how to follow it and why some people prefer not to.

This special set of recommendations reportedly has incredible results for naturally curly hair. However, to correctly follow this unusual method, you should first know that there is a set of rules and things that you are not supposed to do. These are the most important because if you still prefer to use one of the products you are not allowed to, the entire regimen will crumble to dust. So, here is everything you need to know about the curly girl method. Enjoy!

For this method, heat styling tools are completely forbidden, as is shampoo. Also, don’t go near brushes, combs, products that contain sulfates, fragrance, or even alcohol. Now, most people are scared when they hear that they need to give up on shampooing their hair. However, you don’t need to do this abruptly. Instead, you can either cut down on shampoo over time or use a sulfate-free one. Your hair might feel greasy at first, but in time, a balance will be established, and you will see a lot of improvements.

The reason why many people don’t want to follow the curly girl method is because of the lack of shampoo. They do not think this is a good idea at all and are not comfortable with the first few weeks of greasy hair. This is perfectly ok, as we are all different and what works for you, won’t work for your friend. It’s all a matter of choice and perspective.

You are allowed to use…

For this special method, you are allowed to use moisturizers, proteins, humectants, emollients, styling gel ingredients, or even gentle cleansing ingredients.

You should first gently rub your scalp with conditioner using your fingertips. Then, make sections out of your hair, wet it and apply conditioner all over. Depending on how much moisture you need, you can either rinse your hair or leave the conditioner in. Then, take a towel, cup your curls in it and try to make it absorb as much product and water as possible. A diffuser also works great here. The final step is to scrunch gel from the ends of your hair and towards the scalp.

In conclusion
